40 million Vista Sales till now


Microsoft chairman Bill Gates in a release on yesterday said that Windows Vista sales have crossed the 40 million mark in first 100 days of its launch in the market. He said that increasing drift of people's lifestyle towards digital entertainment has helped a lot to boost the sales of Vista.

Windows Vista was released by Microsoft on January 30 this year, the major upgrade for Operating System after five years from Microsoft.
He also said that Windows Server 2008 is planned to be released in second half of 2007. It will have better security features similar to Windows Vista.

AMD set to roll out Phenom processor family


AMD is all set to roll out 'Phenom' processor family in second half of 2007. The new Phenom family will have the architecture similar to quad-core Opteron processors which is set to be launched in mid 2007. AMD has not yet shared features or specification of Phenom and as a result some industry experts are not giving comments before any benchmark test. But Industry experts do feel that the time has arrived that multi core processing should be available to masses as more and more multitasking, video etc. is being used in everyday applications.

AMD Phenom will be answer to Intel's Dual core processor family and it'll be optimised for multitasking, digital entertainment, complex media creation etc. AMD's Product Manager Ian McNaughton said that AMD is now working on processors that enhance user experience by optimizing for multimedia entertainment.

IPTV for deaf people rolls out


A new IPTV service for British Sign Language(BSL ) has been launched in UK. The channel is VeeSee TV which broadcasts news and other programmes in BSL round the clock.The channel can be viewed on a PC or using a set-top box.

BSL Interpreter Susie Grant said that she has launched VeeSee to cater deaf people. VeeSee is the first dedicated channel for BSL users. She said that she was motivated by seeing some talented deaf people and VeeSee will act as an output device for deaf people to show their talent.

Microsoft researching on dual user PC


Researchers at Microsoft Research in Bangalore, India have developed software that enables Two Users to work simultaneously on the same machine and using same display device with two sets of keyboard and mice. The screen is split into two and a new cursor comes in for second user.

The both user sessions share processor and memory resources but the sessions are totally independent of each other. This can be of great help for professionals working on a project and for people who cannot afford to buy PC.

British Library to archive Emails

British Library is working on a project to archive the present day email communication for future generations with the partnership of Microsoft. The archive might present a skewed look as only those emails will be archived that'll be forwarded to British Library. A British Library official said email in many respects has replaced snail mail letters and has become prevalent in present time as it has become the means for filing complaints, blunders, humours etc. He said that they are very excited for this project as archiving of emails has never been done before on such a large scale.

One more legal Challenge for YouTube

England's Top Soccer organization English Premier League is going to sue YouTube for alleged infringement of copyright saying that YouTube is knowingly engaged in copyright infringement to bring traffic to site.

Google-owned YouTube is already facing a $1bn lawsuit from media giant Viacom, accusing it of illegally showing clips from its TV shows.

The English Premier League and US music publisher Bourne launched the legal action in New York and asked for unspecified damages and YouTube's profits from the material in question. Due to increase in commercial value of English Premier League, protection of rights has become priority for the soccer organization.

According to an expert, YouTube was coming under increasing pressure over the issue of copyright and he expected it to eventually settle with its various plaintiffs.

PHP 5.2.2 and PHP 4.4.7 Released


The Development Team for PHP - the widely used web developemnt Language, has announced latest versions PHP 5.2.2 and PHP 4.4.7. These releases come with a bunch of sability and security enhancements eg. bugs in functions like unserialize() etc. that allow attackers to take control of your application, mail header injections through mail() function has also been fixed, memory buffer overflows for some functions have also been fixed.

All users of older versions of PHP are strongly encouraged to update to newer versions.

Microsoft Planning Internet Explorer 8


At the Mix 07 conference, Microsoft has revealed that they are planning for Internet Explorer 8. Security and ease of use will be top priorities for the new explorer and will have better support for the latest web standards.

Microsoft Plans to release IE8 within 18 months from now. They said that IE7 has some problems with some websites not displaying properly which will be fixed in the new version.
On other hand, Mozilla Firefox 3 is under development, and popularity of Firefox is increasing day by day. To keep the lead, Microsoft will need to work on better support for latest CSS(Cascading Style Sheets) Standards.

Yahoo Photos Shutting Down

According to Michael Arrington, Yahoo Photos will be shut down to favour Flickr - a competing photo sharing service acquired by Yahoo back in 2005 due to increasing popularity of more socialized flickr than Yahoo Photos.
Although Yahoo Photos has nearly 2 billion photos compared to 500 million of flickr, yet the traffic for flickr is more than Yahoo Photos.
Yahoo Photos users will be given an option to transfer their photos to flickr through a one click process or they can transfer their photos to other services like photobucket.

Video Sharing facility will soon be available on flickr as told by Stewart Butterfield, co founder of Flickr.

$10 Laptops may become Reality in India


India's Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD)'s idea to make laptops at $10 is gaining shape with two designs already in and public sector undertaking Semiconductor Complex taking keen interest to be part of the project.

As the cost is concerned, one laptop costs $47 but ministry feels that considering the demand for one million laptops, price will come down dramatically.

India was a potential market for Negroponte's $100 laptop, but it was rejected by the market.

Dual Core AMD Turion based on 65nm announced


AMD has announced its latest Dual Core Turion processor based on award winning 65nm Silicon-on-Insulator Technology providing increased transistor performance, scalability and efficiency. These new 65nm Turion processor will be a replacement for the current 90nm processors.

AMD has started shipping this processor to computer manufacturers and the Notebooks based on new processors will be available from leading computer manufacturers later this quarter.

Intel Validates Hynix DDR3 Memory chips


Hynix Semiconductor Inc. has announced that Intel has validated its DDR3 RAM modules. These DDR3 Memory modules are available in multiples of 1GB and 2 GB and claim to operate at 800MHz, 1066 MHz at 1.5 V supply.
Hynix will start the mass production of 1 GB DDR3 Modules on 80nm line in third quarter of this year and plans to have 66nm process by the end of the year.

DDR3 is expected to pick up stream next year as both Intel and AMD will make platform changes by that time. According to Hynix, DDR3 Modules will dominate the market by 2010.

Toshiba may offer Linux on Notebooks


Following Dell's decision to offer Ubuntu installed on its laptops, Toshiba is also considering to offer notebooks with linux as Operating System. In a press release, toshiba said that to increase sales, they'll be offering notebooks with pre-installed Linux.

Luigi Cattaneo, the country manager of Toshiba for Italy said that to capture the Small and Medium sized business market they have to retail laptops within 500 Euro range and it'll be possible by installing Linux on the machines. We hope that more companies should consider installing Linux on their machines.

Colored Notes Cell Phone Messaging Service Launching in India



Canvas M - A joint venture of Tech Mahindra and Motorola is going to launch an interactive cell phone messaging service named Colored Notes in India. This service will enable users to send animated messages alongwith emoticons that can speak out the message to the reciever just as we do in Instant Messengers.

Canvas M is also working on a service that'll allow users to pay their bills by just scanning their handsets at cash counters. Although they didn't reveal the name of the telecom players who'll provide the service but they said they are also doing trails of cellphone application delivery in Europe and US.

Eco Friendly Apple


Following the criticism from environment groups, Apple Inc. said on wednesday that it would lead the competitors to make eco friendly non-toxic products.

This is the first time that Apple is revealing its future plans. Apple is planning to completely remove Arsenic from LCD displays by the end of 2008. Arsenic is used in LCD displays to prevent the formation of defects in the glass used for LCD. Mercury is already eliminated from iPODs as all iPODs utilize LED(Light Emitting Diodes ) instead of fluorescent lamps.

PolyVinyl Chloride(PVC) is a toxic substance found in computer parts and cables, Apple has already started eliminating PVC from its products and all products will be PVC and Brominated Flame Retardants(BFR) free by the end of 2008.
